Yoga for Everyone: 6 Yoga Poses for Beginners

1. Downward-Facing Dog

Arguably the most famous yoga position is the downward-facing dog. It’s been the quintessential pose used to show yogis in film and TV. Start by getting down on all fours and keep your hands shoulder-width apart. Lift your knees, tuck your toes against the mat, and just lift your hips. It’s that simple.

2. Mountain Pose

Mountain pose might not be as famous as the downward-facing dog, but it’s just as important for alignment. In this pose, the crown of your head to your feet is stacked along the line. For this pose, focus on rooting down the feet and lengthening your spine.

3. Crescent Lunge

Crescent lunge is easy for beginners because it’s like a regular lunge, another beginner-friendly exercise position. You’ll need a staggard stance. Put your left foot forward by taking a big step. Bend your back leg to lengthen your back. You can also lift your torso for it.

4. Warrior II Pose

For the warrior II pose, make sure your feet are a mat-length apart when you put your left foot forward. In this pose, you’ll bend your front knee and extend your arms until they’re parallel to the ground. Remember not to let your knee go past the ankle.

5. Plank Yoga Pose

The plank yoga pose is just like the regular plank you’ll do in cardio and has the same benefits. Start on all fours with hands flat on the floor and your knees under your hips. Lift the knees off the floor and extend your legs. Your body should form one long line. Remember to keep your hands a shoulder-width apart for the proper form.

6. Low Plank Pose

This is an extension of the plank pose, and that’s where you’ll start from. Start in the pose by keeping your palms flat on the ground. The shoulders should be stacked directly above your wrists. Don’t forget to engage your core as you’ll do for a normal plank. Slowly lower yourself by bending the elbows and tucking them in close.
